Three years ago I had 400 subscribers and zero strategy. Now my email list is the engine behind everything I do — every launch, every sale, every client I've ever booked started with an email I wrote in under 30 minutes.

I didn't get here because I'm a marketing genius. I got here because I stopped overthinking and started treating my subscribers like real people instead of a metric.

I Built A Whole Business From An Email List That I Desperately Wanted to Ignore

That's not an exaggeration. I would write the email, rewrite it, stare at it, convince myself it was annoying or too long or too salesy, and then save it to drafts where it would sit forever. Meanwhile my list was just sitting there, slowly forgetting who I was.

One day I got frustrated enough to just write something fast and hit send before I could talk myself out of it. It was messy and casual and honestly kind of random. I got more replies to that email than anything I'd ever sent. That's when it clicked — the problem was never my writing. It was the overthinking. People don't want polished. They want to hear from a person.

Everyone is out here telling you to optimize your subject lines and segment your list and A/B test your call to action buttons. And sure, that stuff matters eventually. But none of it matters if your emails are boring. And most of them are boring because people are so focused on doing it "right" that they strip out everything that made them interesting in the first place.

My whole approach is the opposite. Write like yourself. Send more often than you think you should. Talk about things that aren't always directly related to what you sell. Build a relationship with your list that makes selling feel like a natural next step instead of an awkward interruption. The strategy part is real — I care a lot about timing, sequencing, and segmentation — but it only works if the emails are actually worth reading first.

Most people measure their email success by opens and clicks. But replies are where the real magic is — they tell the algorithm you're a real person, they build actual relationships with your subscribers, and they give you more insight into your audience than any survey ever will.

This guide breaks down the exact email format I use to consistently get replies, why it works, and how to make it yours.
